Wood roofing is the best roofing material to use as a roof material in Indianapolis. Wood roofing ages beautiful, it weathers to a soft grayish silver patina that makes the house look very rustic and natural. Several kinds of wood are used to create wood shingles including Alaskan Yellow, Eastern White Cedar, Western Red Cedar, and Cedar. Wooden shingles vary in width, thickness and texture.

A properly installed and maintained wood roof should last 30 to 50 years. Wood shingles are fine, slices of wood. In the past shingles were split from straight grained, knot free bolts of wood. Today shingles are primarily made by being cut which distinguishes them from shakes which are made by being split out of a bolt.

Today's wooden shingles, both sawn and split are vastly different from the wooden shingles that our grand parents used. Present-day shakes are usually thicker than hand split shakes of 40 and 50 years ago and are usually left "undressed" with a rough, corrugated surface. The rough-surface shake is often considered to be more "rustic" and "historic", but in fact this is a conteporary style. The majority of today's shingles are manufactured in pre-cut decorative styles, called fancy-cut shingles.
